Or... I like vinyl so much I don't care about missing out on good music
Every time I see mention on various social media of someone talking about downloads, purchasing downloads, playing Traktor etc etc there's a tirade of comments from vinyl purists stating various things, mostly along the lines that “you should just play vinyl”.
I love vinyl. I don't have as much as I wish, but I have enough. And I will buy more.
I take issue with the idea vinyl is the only worthwhile format. In fact, the argument that follows from loving vinyl to dissing digital formats (not even counting other formats, such as the fine mixtape format from the '80s and early '90s) is quite absurd. For me MP3s have opened up a whole new world of music I would never have heard otherwise.
Is the format really that important?
Since the common availability of MP3s I have been able to hear music that I would never have heard otherwise. Cumbia – among others – is an important one for me.
Is the love of a format worth what you miss out on? The answer is pretty simple: no.
Here are a few examples of what vinyl purists do not want to own:
Last Kind Words – Geeshie Wiley
One of the most amazing things I've ever heard. If you want this track on vinyl.... well there are only a handful of copies in the world. Good luck. Your missing out.
ihop – Matt Shadetek
Matt Shadetek's new album on Dutty Artz is only available as download. So, you don't wanna play any of the great tracks off this album 'cause it's not available on vinyl?
BTSTU – Jai Paul
Another new one, one of my favourite tracks from the past year. Oh, I won't play that, it's not on vinyl.
And I had to include a cumbia. As far as I know this isn't available on vinyl. Who wouldn't want to play this given the opportunity?
So, looking forward to your sets that are too cool for some of the better tracks around!
